Let the Holidaze Celebrations Begin!

12/18/2017

Dear Green Cross Members, Friends & Family,

As we announced in our previous newsletter, we are extending our hours of operation as a thank you to our loyal members. Starting January 6, 2018, The Green Cross Storefront will now be open from 8 am to 10 pm daily to better serve our amazing new and existing members!

Effective January 6, 2018, permitted San Francisco dispensaries can begin selling cannabis for adult use. All individuals over 21 years of age will now be able to access our products and services, and will no longer be required to provide a physician's recommendation and/or Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) to do so. However, there are advantages to obtaining these documents. Please continue reading for more information on the benefits of the MMIC.

Doctor's Recommendations and State Cards in 2018

Picture
Come 2018, patients will still need a valid doctor's recommendation and/or a state-issued Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) in order to access our services the first week of January. However, permitted San Francisco dispensaries will be able to begin selling cannabis for adult use on January 6. At that point in time, you will no longer need a recommendation and/or MMIC to purchase products from The Green Cross. However, you will be required to join our organization as a member and meet the 21+ age requirement.

All patients with a valid MMIC issued by their County Department of Public Health are exempt from paying the 8.5% sales and use tax, per Proposition 64. Our state has never required patients to hold a state MMIC and you will not be required to obtain one. Patients with valid and up-to-date physician recommendations will continue to have access to the high quality medication and service you've come to expect from The Green Cross. Without the MMIC, however, patients will continue to be charged sales and use taxes.

Dispensaries will be required to pay excise taxes on all cannabis sales starting January 1. While this tax liability falls on retailers, cannabis patients should expect significant increases in cannabis and cannabis product pricing in 2018 to help cover these additional costs. Having said that, we recommend stocking up on medicine before the end of the year!

We understand the economy is tight and every penny counts! That being said, we want to be sure you know about opportunities to save money in 2018. The average cost of a MMIC is currently $120.00. However, come 2018, the maximum cost of a MMIC is $100, or $50 for Medi-Cal patients. For patients who spend $100 or more per month, or Medi-Cal patients who spend $50 or more per month, the tax savings on the MMIC are financially advantageous. However, for patients who spend less than $100 per month, or Medi-Cal patients who spend less than $50 per month, there is no financial incentive to obtain the MMIC.

Please note that the MMIC is different than the card issued by your doctor's office. To obtain the MMIC you will need to visit your county Department of Public Health after you obtain a valid physician recommendation, fill out an application, pay the fee, and provide supporting documentation (recommendation and state ID). The Department will not keep any identifying information, and the only information transmitted to the state Medical Marijuana Program is your photo, your card type (e.g. patient or caregiver) and the expiration date of the card. This information is also contained on the MMIC.

Each DPH office has slightly different procedures, fees and hours of operation. For information on procedures elsewhere, check out your county DPH website. For general information about the California Medical Marijuana ID Program, including FAQs, please visit: CDPH.CA.Gov.

The Green Cross Delivery Service Closes Its Doors on December 16

Picture
As a reminder, we announced the closure of The Green Cross Delivery Service in our last newsletter. After 10+ years of serving San Francisco patients, we have, unfortunately, come to the difficult decision to close the doors to our delivery service this Saturday, December 16, 2017.
With stricter regulations and increased overhead costs, as well as a burgeoning market of non-permitted delivery services in the Bay Area, we are no longer in a position to compete with these businesses. Unfortunately, operating a delivery service is a very costly endeavor. Please know that it saddens us greatly to come to this conclusion.
We know this decision will impact our loyal customers significantly, and we truly apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Please understand that this decision did not come easily.
We are extremely grateful to all the amazing members who've stuck by us for the past ten years. It has been an honor and a privilege to offer this invaluable service to you. We are extremely proud to be San Francisco's, and in fact America's, first permitted delivery service, and rest assured The Green Cross is not going anywhere!

The Green Cross will, however, continue to provide quality service at affordable prices through our storefront, located at 4218 Mission Street in San Francisco.

Yes, You’ll Be Able to Smoke Weed Legally in Three Weeks. But Here Are Hard Realities

California’s transition to legal cannabis contains a mind-bending paradox: Ending prohibitions on marijuana will require newly aggressive law enforcement.

When Jan. 1 rolls around, California will not merely be permitting adults 21 and older to use marijuana for recreational purposes. The state and its cities will be creating a new regime to regulate and tax cannabis.

Along with many of you, we are shocked and saddened by the news of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee's untimely passing this past Tuesday. Whether we agreed with his policies or not, we still look back fondly at his time as mayor of San Francisco and as a public servant for many years prior. By all accounts, he was a kind and jovial person who cared deeply about San Francisco and its residents.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to all his friends, family and colleagues during this extremely difficult time.
