Read more » Senate Committee Passes Cannabis Banking BillForbes.com - After a long and arduous wait, it looks like the SAFER Banking Act, the renamed version of the bipartisan law that would allow banks to work with cannabis businesses without penalties, is finally showing some traction after languishing in Congress. Today, the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs held a “markup” on the legislation and as expected, the bill passed decisively. Although members of the House did overwhelmingly vote for the SAFE Banking Act, the bill’s earlier version, several times before, today’s vote marks the first time that Senate members have voted in favor of the measure. Now it’s off to the Senate and the House for more debate, amendment and votes before hopefully proceeding to President Biden’s desk. U.S. Health Officials Recommend Schedule III for CannabisMGMagazine.com - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has recommended reclassifying cannabis from Schedule I to a less restrictive Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act, following President Biden’s request last year for the Department of Justice (DOJ) and HHS to “expeditiously” reconsider the plant’s classification. In a letter dated Aug. 29, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine submitted the department’s rescheduling recommendation to Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Anne Milgram, according to Bloomberg News. A DEA spokesperson confirmed the department received the letter and will initiate a review. After the review is complete, the nation’s top drug enforcement agency will forward its recommendation to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland for action. Legalizing for adult use, meanwhile, was not associated with any statistically significant change in foster care entries. Researchers at Georgia College and State University set out to learn whether legalization would “lessen stigma, permit proper use, and reduce the chance that a child will be removed” or, conversely, if foster care cases would increase due to expanded access to legal cannabis.
