Happy 4th of July Weekend from The Green Cross!

7/1/2020

Picture
Dear Green Cross Members, Friends & Family,

July 4th is only a few days away and we hope everyone is planning safe and fun ways to celebrate this year! We may not be able to celebrate the same way we have in year's past, but there's no reason we can't find exciting new ways to enjoy the festivities in small gathering of friends and/or family while taking all social distancing precautions. There are also many protests you can participate in throughout the Bay Area this 4th of July weekend to show your support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The Green Cross will be open from 8 am to 7 pm that day, so put on a face covering and feel free to stop by to pick up your favorite mood-elevating products!

We would like to remind everyone that our hours of operation are now 8 am to 7 pm daily, 7 days a week. We initially decided to reduce our hours due to Mayor Breed's citywide curfew. However, with the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, we've made the difficult decision to continue operating these hours for the foreseeable future. As soon as it's safe and prudent to return to our normal hours, we will do so. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time of transition.

Over the coming weeks, The Green Cross is undergoing various construction projects. This means there will be scaffolding and workers outside our storefront throughout the day. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this causes and greatly appreciate your patience with us in the meantime.

We have many worthwhile specials, price drops and new products available for the upcoming holiday weekend (and beyond!), so please keep reading for more details. We know there is a lot going on in the world right now, and we hope everyone is staying safe, healthy and sane during these challenging times.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Independence day!

The Surprising Reason the U.S. May Be Reluctant to Legalize Marijuana

Picture
Amid the chaos of 2020, which has included a stock market crash, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and even some hoopla about the arrival of murder hornets, there's still the realization that this is an election year. In a little over four months, Americans across the country will be heading to the polls or mailing in their ballots to determine who'll lead the U.S. for the next four years.

Among the many issues that'll be getting more of a spotlight than in year's past this election is marijuana. In each of the last two years, Gallup's national poll has found that a record-tying 66% of respondents favor legalization. Other polls, while differing in the nominal support value, also showing overwhelming and clear evidence that the American public favors legalization. Read more »

Pot Dispensaries Broken Into and Looted Across SF and California

Picture
Cannabis shop owners suspect organized crime has a hand in the ransacking of dispensaries sweeping the state under the George Floyd demonstrations.

The standard opportunistic looting that retailers more or less everywhere in the U.S. have seen during the current unrest has had a different and suspiciously coordinated look and feel to it with the looting of California cannabis dispensaries. The national pot publication Leafly counts 43 dispensaries across California robbed since this weekend, and reports that “professional burglars” used “safe-cracking equipment.” They also reviewed security footage showing that “Two professional-looking men in head-to-toe clean suits were caught on camera in one San Francisco dispensary Saturday night.” Read more »

'Cannabis burned during worship' by ancient Israelites - study

Ancient Israelites burned cannabis as part of their religious rituals, an archaeological study has found.

A well-preserved substance found in a 2,700-year-old temple in Tel Arad has been identified as cannabis, including its psychoactive compound THC.

Researchers concluded that cannabis may have been burned in order to induce a high among worshippers. Read more »

Why COVID Might Lead To Legal Weed Nationwide

With many businesses shuttered nationwide in response to the ongoing pandemic, states and cities are facing mounting budget shortfalls. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has recently estimated that state coffers will fall 15% below spending in the current fiscal year with 25% budget shortfalls to be seen in 2021. In Oregon, state officials forecast a $10.5 billion decrease in tax revenues between now and 2025 as a result of the pandemic.

In all but one state where cannabis is legal, the industry was declared essential. In Massachusetts, the industry was briefly closed but has now reopened. Marijuana sales have proved a reliable source of revenue even as many sectors of the economy shut down. April’s cannabis sales in Oregon were 45% higher than they had been the previous year. Read more »
