Many of you have voiced your concern about industry-wide increases to cannabis pricing, and as a result, we now offer our members a price break on 1 oz. bud! Going forward, all 1 oz. purchases have decreased by 10%. Please note that this offer only applies to 1 oz. purchases of a single strain. PSA: Don’t drive high. Driving is dangerous. Over 32,000 Americans die annually in car crashes, and over 2 million are injured, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 1 in 3 crash deaths involve substance-impaired driving. In other words, it’s safer to avoid driving, but if you have to drive, drive sober.
This is why The Green Cross Member Handbook advises against driving while impaired by cannabis – and California state law punishes consuming cannabis while driving (Cal. Veh. 23221; $250 fine), and driving under the influence of cannabis (Cal. Veh. 23152(f)). California’s DUI penalties for the first offense include at least 48 hours incarceration, $1,800 in fines, and 3-5 years probation; for the second offense, 10 days incarceration; and for the third offense, 120 days incarceration (Cal. Veh. 23536 et seq.).
Many scientists have studied the effects of cannabis use on driving safety. Most have found that driving while under the influence of cannabis is less safe and more likely to result in car accidents.
In 2016 in Addiction, Rogeberg and Elvik published “The effects of cannabis intoxication on motor vehicle collision revisited and revised”, a meta-study of 22 driving culpability studies published between 1982 and 2015. They concluded that “acute cannabis intoxication is associated with a statistically significant increase in motor vehicle crash risk” with an odds ratio of between 1.2 to 1.4. In other words, drivers inebriated by cannabis are significantly more likely to get in car crashes.
The same year, Hartman, et al., published “Cannabis effects on driving longitudinal control with and without alcohol” in the Journal of Applied Toxicology. They found that higher THC blood levels have increasing correlation with decreased speed and increased following distance. This means that using more THC makes drivers slower and tailgate less, but this partial compensation for impaired reaction-time and decision-making does not fully mitigate impairment.
This year in Drug and Alcohol Review, Hall published “How should we respond to cannabis-impaired driving?”, a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies. He showed that recent cannabis use elevates the risk of motor vehicle accident by a rate of 1.5 to 2.0 times above control. In other words, having smoked recently made people as much as doubly like to get in car accidents.
We conclude that driving while impaired by cannabis is less safe than driving sober, and is more likely to lead to car crashes. Driving while impaired can cause death, injury, and incarceration. We encourage all members of The Green Cross to be careful, avoid driving while inebriated, and use a designated driver if necessary. If you’re ever unsure of whether you’re safe to drive, please take a taxi or ride-share, instead of risking the safety of yourself and everyone around you.

Congress is going to make marijuana moves

Picture
Despite majority public support in favor of marijuana legalization, and super-majority support in favor of medical cannabis access, members of Congress have nonetheless been reticent to move forward with any significant changes to federal pot policy. That is, until now.

Following last week’s midterm election results, legislative leaders in both the House and Senate appear ready to take on the cannabis issue. Read more »

TBI’s 5 Best: Weed Dispensaries in the City

The Green Cross has always been at the forefront of innovation in San Francisco’s cannabis scene. Since it opened its doors in 2004, it has paved the way for cannabis delivery services (it was one of the first!) and has long set a professional tone when it comes to selling cannabis. At the Green Cross, it’s not the ambience that attracts new customers but rather the establishment’s history and reputation. Kevin Reed, the president of the Green Cross, is also known as an outspoken cannabis activist and raises awareness about patient rights nationwide. Read more »

As Mexico and Canada legalize cannabis, will the U.S. be pressured to end prohibition?

Picture
Mexico’s Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled for the fifth time that the country’s prohibition on marijuana is unconstitutional, essentially making it difficult for authorities to successfully prosecute someone for consumption, possession or cultivation of the plant.

Under Mexican law, precedent is set when the Supreme Court rules similarly in five separate cases. With this threshold now met, individuals charged with marijuana crimes can successfully cite the court’s rulings to argue that any punishment would impede their constitutional rights. But the rulings have no bearing on the process of commercialization or sales of cannabis. It is now up to Mexican lawmakers to decide how pot will be regulated. Read more »

First FDA-approved cannabis-based drug now available in the US

Epidiolex, the first cannabis-based medication approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, is now available by prescription in all 50 states.

The twice-daily oral solution is approved for use in patients 2 and older to treat two types of epileptic syndromes: Dravet syndrome, a rare genetic dysfunction of the brain that begins in the first year of life, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a form of epilepsy with multiple types of seizures that begins in early childhood, usually between ages 3 and 5.  Read more »

New Yorkers are smoking pot in public like it’s no big deal

Picture
The city is getting higher by the day — and we’re not talking about Manhattan skyscrapers.

In the span of a few hours in broad daylight last week, The Post encountered six people smoking reefer on busy downtown sidewalks.

Mayor Bill de Blasio decriminalized low-level marijuana possession last November — but many New Yorkers evidently mistook that for de-facto legalization. Read more »

Three states vote in favor of marijuana

Picture
Michigan, Missouri, and Utah eased their laws, but North Dakota rejected recreational marijuana.

Three states voted in favor of marijuana legalization in yesterday’s midterm elections. Voters in Utah and Missouri approved the drug for medical use, while Michigan voters passed an amendment that legalized cannabis for recreational purposes. Though North Dakota voters rejected a push for recreational marijuana, the results are further evidence of growing support for easing marijuana restrictions. Read more »
