After a non-fault car accident left me with a severe back injury in my teens, I became a medical patient seeking relief through cannabis. Originally charged by the SFPD with felony cannabis charges under the previous District Attorney’s office, I faced significant legal challenges that threatened to derail my life and the possibility of helping others through medical cannabis. However, when Kamala Harris took over as District Attorney, everything changed. Recognizing the importance of justice and the potential benefits of medical cannabis, Kamala Harris’s office offered me a plea deal that was both innovative and life-changing. The deal included informal probation and a $100 fine, but more importantly, it came with a unique stipulation: I was permitted to sell cannabis to medical patients. This opportunity was the catalyst that ignited my passion to provide compassionate care and ultimately led to the founding of The Green Cross. Kamala Harris’s understanding and commitment to justice were crucial at that moment. Her decision to grant this deal not only allowed me to move forward but also laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of the San Francisco community. The Green Cross has always been more than just a dispensary; it represents resilience, community support, and a dedication to justice. Although The Green Cross was not yet established at that time, the seeds of our mission were sown with the support of Kamala Harris’s office. Ever since that pivotal moment, we have followed and supported Kamala Harris throughout her career and her journey to the White House. Her dedication to justice and equity has resonated with us, and we have proudly watched as she became the Vice President of the United States. Her leadership continues to inspire us in our mission to provide compassionate care to those in need. We owe much of our existence today to the early support and understanding shown by Kamala Harris and other key figures who recognized the importance of access to medical cannabis. Collection of Unorthodox TaxidermyThe fledgling Springfield Zoo was a beloved part of Dr. Seuss’s childhood. If his father wasn’t able to accompany him and his sketchpad there, he would go with his mother or his sister, Marnie. Only later, when Ted’s dad became the superintendent of parks, did he also become an unexpected resource, who now aided and abetted his son’s artistic efforts. Zoo animals that had met their demise lived on as their bills, horns, and antlers were shipped to Ted’s New York apartment to become exotic beaks and headdresses on his bizarre taxidermy sculptures. The result was an astounding 18 sculptures—created during the 1930s—which remain today as some of the finest examples of his inventive and multidimensional creativity. Marnie, who from the beginning had witnessed the genesis of sculptures for The Seuss System of Unorthodox Taxidermy, described Ted’s home and its “occupants” on November 28, 1937 for The Springfield Union: “They have a charming apartment on Park Avenue, New York, but it is so filled with his animals that I am apt to have a nightmare whenever I visit them.” On the other hand, the June 7, 1938, issue of Look magazine dubbed Ted Geisel "The World’s Most Eminent Authority on Unheard-Of Animals."
