We wanted to share the key ideas with you directly so you can read the story without needing to sign up anywhere. The truth is simple: cannabis itself isn’t failing. Demand still exists. People still rely on it for wellness, relaxation, sleep, creativity, and relief. What’s changing is the economic environment around the legal market. Over the past several years — especially in cities like San Francisco — the number of licensed businesses expanded faster than the underlying market could realistically support. At the same time, taxes, compliance costs, testing requirements, and local regulations continued to increase. Legal operators are expected to meet extremely high standards, which we support, but those costs are real and they add up quickly. Meanwhile, the illicit market continues to operate without those same expenses, creating an uneven playing field. When consumers are also facing rising costs of living — housing, food, utilities — discretionary spending naturally tightens. Cannabis, like many industries, feels that pressure. This combination of oversupply, high operating costs, and broader economic stress has led to closures across California and particularly here in San Francisco. You may have seen familiar names disappear over the past few years. That isn’t because cannabis stopped working or people stopped caring. It’s because the structure of the market hasn’t always matched economic reality. At The Green Cross, we’ve been serving this community since 2004. We’ve seen multiple phases of the industry — from early medical access to legalization and everything in between. What has remained constant is our belief that safe, regulated access matters, and that responsible operators should be able to survive in a fair marketplace.
