After a non-fault car accident left me with a severe back injury in my teens, I became a medical patient seeking relief through cannabis. Originally charged by the SFPD with felony cannabis charges under the previous District Attorney’s office, I faced significant legal challenges that threatened to derail my life and the possibility of helping others through medical cannabis. However, when Kamala Harris took over as District Attorney, everything changed. Recognizing the importance of justice and the potential benefits of medical cannabis, Kamala Harris’s office offered me a plea deal that was both innovative and life-changing. The deal included informal probation and a $100 fine, but more importantly, it came with a unique stipulation: I was permitted to sell cannabis to medical patients. This opportunity was the catalyst that ignited my passion to provide compassionate care and ultimately led to the founding of The Green Cross. Kamala Harris’s understanding and commitment to justice were crucial at that moment. Her decision to grant this deal not only allowed me to move forward but also laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of the San Francisco community. The Green Cross has always been more than just a dispensary; it represents resilience, community support, and a dedication to justice. Although The Green Cross was not yet established at that time, the seeds of our mission were sown with the support of Kamala Harris’s office. Ever since that pivotal moment, we have followed and supported Kamala Harris throughout her career and her journey to the White House. Her dedication to justice and equity has resonated with us, and we have proudly watched as she became the Vice President of the United States. Her leadership continues to inspire us in our mission to provide compassionate care to those in need. We owe much of our existence today to the early support and understanding shown by Kamala Harris and other key figures who recognized the importance of access to medical cannabis. From those humble beginnings, driven by a deep commitment to helping others, to the present day where The Green Cross continues to serve patients with care and dedication, our mission has remained steadfast. As we reflect on our journey, we are deeply grateful for the support that allowed us to thrive and for the community that has stood by us every step of the way. California cannabis business orgs raise red flags over proposed hemp supply chain integrationNote from The Green Cross President: "The proposed amendment to AB 2223 is a Trojan horse, posing as a solution to intoxicating hemp goods while threatening California’s legal cannabis industry. It risks creating an even more unbalanced market by favoring out-of-state hemp operators and large corporations, leaving small, local, and equity-driven businesses struggling to survive. This amendment could allow big players to hijack California’s cannabis economy, disregarding the small farmers and social equity operators who have fought to build it. Granting interstate commerce exclusivity to a select few cannabis distributors will only deepen the divide, rewarding the powerful at the expense of the vulnerable. Adding oversight of intoxicating hemp goods to the Department of Cannabis Control will stretch resources thin and further complicate an already challenging industry. Governor Newsom’s support of this amendment is a blow to those who have been the backbone of California’s cannabis sector. We must oppose this amendment to protect the small businesses, social equity applicants, and community-focused companies that have made California the leader in cannabis culture and innovation.
