Dear Green Cross Community, For more than 22 years, The Green Cross has had the privilege of serving San Francisco. Our journey began with a storefront during the early medical cannabis era, though it lasted only three years before we were forced to close. What followed was nearly a decade operating as a delivery service, and eventually the opportunity to open our current storefront, which many of you have known for almost 13 years. Along the way, we have navigated changing laws, neighborhood challenges, the transition to adult-use legalization, economic cycles, and even a global pandemic. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to patients, customers, and community. Today, The Green Cross is proud to be one of the longest-running licensed dispensaries in San Francisco and the last remaining nonprofit cannabis retailer in the city. Because of your support, we have been able to donate more than $700,000 to local nonprofits and community organizations while building a reputation for quality, compassion, and service that has earned multiple awards and recognition throughout the industry. Thousands of customers have trusted us over the years, and many relationships formed here have lasted a lifetime. Because of you, we have been able to build something meaningful. Today, we want to share something honestly. For the first time in our history, we find ourselves facing real uncertainty about the future. The cannabis industry in California, and especially in San Francisco, is going through one of the most difficult periods it has ever experienced. Costs continue to rise while retail prices fall. Taxes remain high. Consumer spending has tightened. Oversupply has intensified competition. Legal operators are now competing not only with each other, but also with unregulated hemp products and illicit sellers who do not face the same testing, tax, or compliance requirements. Across San Francisco, at least two dozen dispensaries have closed permanently, and roughly another dozen delivery licenses have disappeared entirely. Beyond those losses are numerous operators who were forced to sell, transfer ownership under financial distress, or reopen under new names at the same locations just to survive. The public narrative often focuses only on who is still open, but that masks the scale of the churn and the financial damage that has occurred. Behind every closure, transfer, or failed venture are people who invested their savings, their time, and their belief in this industry, only to face an economic model that has become increasingly difficult to sustain. Like many small businesses across America right now, we are navigating a new economic reality. Many of you have already seen changes at The Green Cross over the past few years. We reduced operating hours. We scaled back programs. We went from more than 50 employees to a team of about 10. These decisions were not made lightly. They were made so we could continue operating responsibly while honoring our commitments to staff, vendors, and the community for as long as possible. There is a certain level of business every organization needs simply to remain open and compliant. We have now reached that threshold. While we continue adapting every day, we would be less than honest if we said we were not concerned about what the future may hold. At the same time, we are not standing still. We are tightening operations, renegotiating costs, simplifying where needed, and focusing on delivering value without compromising quality, safety, or integrity. Our mission remains the same as it has always been: to serve our customers with care, respect, and consistency while operating responsibly within the legal system. What we do know is this: serving this community has been one of the great honors of our lives. We have met extraordinary people here. We have shared laughter, stories, healing, and connection. We have watched patients become friends and friends become family. We have been part of moments both joyful and difficult, and those experiences will stay with us forever. We are still here.
