A 'monstrous problem' created 7 years ago haunts California's weed industry

SFGate.com - In the late spring of 2015, Gavin Newsom traveled north to Humboldt County to rally support for legalizing cannabis. Pot farmers in the historic cannabis growing region were deeply skeptical of legalization, fearing that big corporations would wipe out their small family farms. Newsom, then a lieutenant governor, came with both a warning and a promise. He confirmed that big money interests were already lobbying in Sacramento, but Newsom said he would stand in their way.

“With respect,” Newsom told a standing-room-only crowd at a Garberville theater, according to the North Coast Journal, “they’re writing a lot of you guys out and we cannot let that happen.” The audience appeared wooed by the savvy politician, and proceeded to take selfies with the rising star. TheHill.com - The US Cannabis Council hired Mercury Public Affairs to lobby on issues related to the cannabis industry. The lobbyist on the account is Bryan Lanza, who served as communications director for President-elect Trump’s first transition team.

The cannabis industry is at a pivotal period. The Biden administration in May initiated the formal rulemaking process to reschedule marijuana to a Schedule III drug with low or moderate potential for abuse from Schedule I, alongside heroin and LSD in a category of drugs with a high risk of addiction and no medical use. Analysis: Lifetime cannabis use not associated with elevated risk of hypertension

NORML.org - Neither recent nor lifetime cannabis use is associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension or high blood pressure among older adults, according to data published in the journal Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine.

Texas Lawmaker Files Cannabis Legalization Bill

Forbes.com - A Texas state lawmaker this week filed a bill to legalize cannabis for adults and establish a regulated market for the production and sale of recreational marijuana. Democratic state Rep. Jessica González submitted the legislation for the 2025 legislative that begins in January, online cannabis news source Marijuana Moment reported on Wednesday.

The legislation (HB 1208) would legalize, regulate and tax cannabis in Texas. The measure would allow adults aged 21 and over to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana, including up to 15 grams of cannabis concentrates. Adults would also be able to possess up to 10 ounces of weed at home, although any quantity above 2.5 ounces would be required to be stored in a secure location. Read more »

MarijuanaMoment.net - A new study shows that contrary to lazy stoner stereotypes, legal medical marijuana “promotes greater physical activity” in people with chronic medical conditions and that “legal recreational cannabis promotes (even more so) greater physical activity in those not experiencing chronic medical conditions.”

“In the U.S. adult population, current cannabis use is significantly associated with higher prevalence of physical activity,” the new paper, published this month in the Journal of Cannabis Research, concludes. “The prevalence of physical activity is significantly greater in U.S. states and territories where cannabis is legalized for recreational and medical purposes (vs. not legal).” Read more »

Cannabis Compounds Show ‘Promising Potential As Anticancer Agents’

Forbes.com - Compounds in marijuana including THC and CBD show “promising potential as anticancer agents,” according to a recent review of scientific literature. The review by an international team of researchers found several ways that compounds in cannabis can affect cancer, including limiting the growth and spread of tumors and other benefits.

To complete the review, nine researchers from universities in Pakistan, Portugal, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Romania and South Korea conducted a comprehensive search of several online databases for scientific literature that investigated the association between cannabis and cancer. The authors’ search “focused on peer-reviewed articles, review articles, and clinical trials discussing the anticancer properties of cannabinoids.” To be included in the review, articles had to be written in English and contain information on “the mechanisms of action and clinical efficacy of cannabinoids in cancer.” Read more »
